The Give Black Foundation is one of the only organizations in America that is focused on organizing and promoting black philanthropy at a national level. We develop far-reaching programs that are critical to helping the overall ecosystem of black charitable giving thrive.
Black Philanthropy is in Crisis.
A 2014 study by the D5 Coalition found that of $19.8 billion dollars in grant funding awarded between 2009 and 2011, only 1.7% went to programs exclusive to black communities; if we conservatively assume that the additional 5.7% of charitable dollars that went to minority communities of unspecified ethnicity went entirely to black communities, it would still be true that no more than 7.3% of funding reached black beneficiaries.
A 2016 PAALF study found that black-led non-profits relied more on government funding than their white counterparts, spent more time on fundraising and were more likely to name it as a significant challenge, and were only half as likely to be able to maintain an operating reserve. We play a critical role in helping black philanthropy help itself by making it easier for those who care about black communities to support them.
Your Donation Will Support the Following Programs:
The Black Charity Finder. Help us maintain and grow this tool that helps donors, volunteers, event-seekers, and grant makers find and engage with organizations serving black communities.
“Charity Begins at Home: The Untold Story of Black Philanthropy”. Help us produce a feature-length documentary that will discuss the past, present and future of black philanthropy. This positive, accurate depiction of our rich tradition of giving will be an important asset to share with our children and to use as an education tool within the greater philanthropic community.
Community Re-Granting. Help us support our member organizations by allowing us to re-grant our excess funds. This program will grant 100% of funds exceeding our operating reserve to member organizations.
The Black Philanthropy Research Initiative. Help us build the first national database of non-profits and funding entities focused on black communities.
